During the February schools half term holiday the regular pre-season county coaching sessions took place at the National Golf Centre, Woodhall Spa. First up on the Monday were the invited members of the ‘A’ squad followed by ‘B’ squad members on the Tuesday. Three of the county’s top professional coaches were present to assess the progress of the players prior to the start of the competitive season. About 15 players were present on each day representing clubs from right across Lincolnshire – Holme Hall and Forest Pines in the north to Boston and Spalding in the south and many others in between. It is from these squads that the junior teams will be selected to play for the county in several inter county team matches during the year. Matches against Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire and Rutland are played at both under 18 and under 16 level. Some of these juniors may even represent the county at adult level too.
More recently the trials continued with a Boys vs Girls match held at Spalding Golf Club. The excellent contest was held in very good weather and very good golf was to the fore! The Boys gave full handicap difference to the Girls plus two extra shots in the four ball better ball match play format. The Girls as usual gave an excellent account of themselves and at the half way stage lead in all the matches. But the Boys were up for the challenge and managed to turn things round and run out winners by 2 ½ to 1 ½ matches. The individual outcomes were very close, as follows;
Jake Craddock (Sleaford) & Jack Evans (Cleethorpes) won 1 up against Lily Farr and Amy Fletcher
Alex Wright (Belton Park) & Owen Musgrave (Forest Pines) lost 6 & 5 against Tilly Kedzlie and Tilly Garfoot
Ben Drake (Kenwick Park) & Jack Woodham (Cleethorpes) won 1 up against Emma Keay and Isobel Haughton
Callum Bruce (Normanby Hall) & Callum Moore (Woodhall Spa) halved with Ellie Haughton and Kazzia Fox
Next up is another pre-season trial with an ‘A’ Squad vs ‘B’ Squad match at Market Rasen before the first individual competition at Lincoln Golf Club.
