The Nottinghamshire U18 boys team started the 2015 season well when they defeated Warwickshire boys by a single point in awful weather at Radcliffe on Trent GC on Sunday 29th March. A combination of heavy rain and strong gusting wind made play a challenge for everyone.
Nottinghamshire suffered an early reversal when last year’s unbeaten pairing Daniel O’ Loughlin and Reece Samson were beaten in the first foursomes match of the morning play. County boys Captain, Jordan Boulton and Aaron Howitt won the next game 2 up and Jake Benson and Lewis Parker repeated the treatment in the third match. New pairing Ben Jones and Cole Betteridge played well to add a further point and with the final two pairings sharing the spoils with their Warwickshire rivals, Nottinghamshire went in to lunch with a 4 v 2 advantage.
With the weather worsening and the boys tiring from the rigours of fighting against the winds the afternoon singles matches were reduced to 12 holes. Warwickshire seemed set to make a commendable comeback when Connor Bradshaw came to last hole needing a final hole win to secure a half in his individual match and a win for Nottinghamshire overall. Connor duly obliged and Nottinghamshire crept over the line to win the match by that solitary point. Congratulations to everyone who watched and played in such difficult conditions.
And now the U18 boys squad moves on to Wallasey (Cheshire) to compete in this year’s Four Counties Championship where they will play against the might of Lancashire, Cheshire and Shropshire & Herefordshire. We wish them well in this first prestigious event of the year.
